Welding procedures

How can a company share their welding procedures?

If welding procedures are qualified in accordance with ISO 15614, these procedures can be used to qualify procedures in accordance with ISO 15612, which signifies a standard welding procedure. The values for the existing procedure are retained, but the right company is the owner of the procedure (15612), i.e no doubts during audits or reviews.

Standard welding procedures can be used if, for example:

  • there are no special customer requirements, but verified values are desired.
  • the execution class is EXC1, EXC2 or EXC3 as per EN 1090-2.
  • a welding procedure is required as per ISO 3834.

The valid ranges of the procedures

  • Maximum yield strength: 355 MPa. This means that steel with a yield strength of 235, 275 and 355 MPa can be welded.
  • Butt welds are qualified for plate with a thickness of 6 mm, 12 mm or 30 mm. This provides a valid range of 3-12 mm, 3-24 mm and 15-60 mm respectively.
  • The valid range for multi-pass fillet welding includes all throat sizes. The qualified sample is welded with a material thickness of 30 mm against a pipe with a diameter of 100 mm. This provides a valid diameter range of 50 mm or more for branch connections as well as a material thickness of 5 mm or more.
  • The valid range for a single-pass fillet weld includes throat sizes of 3-6mm. The qualified sample is welded with a material thickness of 6 mm on a pipe with a diameter of 80 mm. This provides a valid diameter range of 40 mm or more as well as a material thickness of 3-12 mm.
  • The qualified shielding gas is a mix of 82% Argon and 18% carbon dioxide (M21).
  • Qualified special procedures for welding on primer have a valid thickness range for the paint of up to 42µm.
